World's best known deaf rapper Signmark at the Council of Europe
The world's most famous deaf rap artist Signmark, who comes from Finland, performed in front of parliamentarians attending the Spring session of our Parliamentary Assembly (PACE). He was there to publicise a new report on the challenges facing sign language in Europe.
The report gives an overview of the status of sign languages and associated rights in Council of Europe member states. It includes national examples of good practices as well as feedback from national associations of the deaf. It offers ten recommendations on how to promote the status of sign languages, arguing that they should be understood and recognised both from a disability and a language rights point of view.
Signmark is the first rap artist ever to have performed at the United Nations headquarters in New York, and he has performed for audiences of up to 15,000 during his career.
