What is it and how can it be combatted?
Democracy is under threat in Europe as a result of the rise of populist movements. They challenge democratic norms, spread fake news and ignore opposing points of view. They offer simple solutions to complex problems, and claim to be the sole representatives of "the people".
What can be done to tackle populism? In this video we first ask members of the public what they think, before consulting the Council of Europe's Secretary General, Thorbjørn Jagland, who issued a special report on the subject earlier this year.
