Gender equality – sexism in the media
Fighting gender stereotyping
Sexism in the media is a problem. Gender equality is an essential element of democracy. When did women stop being used as sex objects to sell cars and other products? When did the media start depicting them as stupid compared with men? Experts note the tendency of journalists to turn to men for expert analysis on a subject in the news, rather than a woman. The Amsterdam conference made a series of recommendations to the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers, including that states, media organisations and civil society should work together to fight gender stereotyping.
