Child sex abuse victim speaks out
Matthew McVarish is walking 10,000 miles to raise awareness of the problem
In this interview, Matthew McVarish discusses his commitment to walking 16,000 kilometres between Europe’s capitals as part of “Road to Change”, a campaign to stamp out child sexual abuse by ending the silence that surrounds it. McVarish is himself a victim of sexual abuse, which he suffered as a child at the hands of his own uncle. During the next 18 years, more than 30 million children in Europe will be sexually abused, and so McVarish is walking through 29 countries in order to raise awareness of this huge human rights issue. He visited the Council of Europe in Strasbourg to share his story and to meet Council of Europe Secretary General Jagland, together with some top experts on this subject.
